Every relationship asks for adjustment. Plans change, preferences meet in the middle and two lives make room for each other. The word compromise can describe something generous and reciprocal.

It can also hide an imbalance. A compromise made freely is different from one made to prevent anger, withdrawal or rejection. The important question is not simply whether you compromise, but what happens to you when you do—and whether the movement travels in both directions.

Look at patterns rather than isolated moments. One difficult week does not define a relationship. Repeatedly abandoning needs, values or boundaries deserves a more honest look.
